“The EU continues to discriminate against Turkey due to political and ideological motives and pressure from Greece,” declared — in a notably provocative tone — Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli today, as he assessed the discussions surrounding the outcomes of last week’s NATO Summit.
Bahçeli also launched a sharp attack on Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis over statements he made in Ankara. According to Bahçeli, those remarks are “extremely serious” because Mitsotakis linked Turkey’s participation in European security mechanisms to the Greek-Turkish disputes in the Aegean.
Describing this period as a turning point for Europe, Erdoğan’s coalition partner claimed: “Following the Ankara Summit, one of the most important issues that European capitals must revisit is Turkey’s EU negotiation process. Europe’s strategic future must be reassessed and a fair path forward must be established.”
He further argued that Turkey’s place is not in the EU’s waiting room, stressing that “the promises made to Turkey were not kept. Turkey’s legitimate expectations were not met. This approach has also damaged Europe itself.”
