The Judges and Prosecutors Union welcomes the lifting of parliamentary immunity for Zoe Konstantopoulou by the Greek Parliament in an official statement. The judicial union notes that this decision opens the way for criminal investigation into the felony charges attributed to Ms. Konstantopoulou for acts committed against judicial officials.
The detailed statement from the Judges and Prosecutors Union reads as follows:
“The parliamentary majority’s decision to lift immunity for MP Zoe Konstantopoulou regarding felony acts committed against judicial officials is welcomed by the Judicial Body as a necessary step to protect the dignity of judicial officers. This opens the path for criminal investigation and evaluation of her actions. Felonious and criminal activities committed by MPs and lawyers that have absolutely no connection to either their legal profession or parliamentary duties must be condemned by all political parties in the country and by bar associations.
Parliamentary immunity was not granted by the Constitutional legislator as a special privilege to cover up criminal offenses against citizens, but as protection for MPs regarding acts connected to their duties. The issue of abolishing provisions regarding ministerial responsibility within the framework of the upcoming constitutional revision, which political parties show sensitivity toward, should not be treated separately from the special preferential treatment that MPs enjoy when acting as private citizens. This constitutes not only a necessary condition for public trust in Justice, but particularly tangible proof of efforts to establish the democratic principle of citizens’ equality before the law.”
