The furious reaction of Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis was triggered by the leak to the press of excerpts from what was said between PASOK president Nikos Androulakis and National Intelligence Service (EYP) director Themistoklis Demiris during the closed-door session of the Institutions Committee and his hearing.
Kaklamanis: “What happened is a parliamentary deviation”
Speaking with parliamentary correspondents, he emphasized that he has already ordered the competent Ethics Committee to conduct an investigation into the source of the leaks and subsequently proceed with legal procedures, leaving open even the possibility of criminal prosecution. “It is even a criminal offense!” the Parliament Speaker characteristically stated.
However, the Parliament Speaker avoided naming specific individuals and parties. “I will not play detective. I am not a judge, nor a lawyer. The committee will do what is necessary. What happened is a parliamentary deviation, not just trivializing,” Nikitas Kaklamanis said meaningfully.
He even invoked Article 43A of the Rules of Procedure, according to which “discussions about E.Y.P. activities are classified and members are bound to maintain this confidentiality even after the end of their term.” He also denounced that the Code of Ethics was violated, as confidentiality rules were not observed.
