Markopoulos: We respect the European prosecutor’s office
Subsequently, he said that “Ms. Kovesi is here for the second time. All ministries are here and welcome her. Yes, we respect the European prosecutor’s office. But there are some questions” and wondered about “who is responsible for the leaks” regarding the OPEKEPE scandal.
“The 13 colleagues made a difficult but correct decision. We approve it, we know from the outset that it is right. They stood with dignity, with arguments, with their truth. We must respect their wish, something we believe they will do, they will support their right. We should not deprive them of this right they asked of us, to rise to the occasion and be accountable to Greek society,” Mr. Markopoulos concluded.
Markopoulos: Favoritism wasn’t born in 2019
Earlier, he spoke about the fact that “we are a party in good times and difficult times. If something characterizes us versus our political opponents, it is self-criticism,” speaking during the procedure for lifting parliamentary immunity of ruling party MPs mentioned in the OPEKEPE case file. “Citizens became wiser today. Our eleven MPs took their positions, none hid, they exercised their democratic duty, an obligation of accountability to the citizen,” the New Democracy parliamentary spokesperson characteristically noted.
“It would be hypocritical to say that you are not to blame. Favoritism wasn’t born in 2019, unless we hear from PASOK that they didn’t engage in favoritism but rather some fast-track social benefits,” Mr. Markopoulos also emphasized and added that “nowhere was there any suspicion of colleague bribery,” he stressed. “I had made it clear that we must let Ms. Kovesi do her job,” he supported at another point in his speech.
