It was an emotional moment for Carla Bruni, wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, as Sarkozy was led to La Santé prison to serve a five-year sentence. The former supermodel, now 57, appeared tearful, showing her unwavering support for her husband at a critical moment in his life. Sarkozy was convicted of “criminal conspiracy” in a scheme to launder millions of dollars from Libyan colonel Gaddafi. As he headed to the notorious La Santé prison, he appeared somber, while crowds of supporters gathered to show solidarity with the former president. Carla Bruni, along with their son Louis, has stood by Sarkozy’s side since his legal troubles began in 2012, showing steadiness and composure in the face of this difficult moment. Wearing a dark blue jacket and tie, Sarkozy bid farewell to Bruni, while relatives and supporters applauded enthusiastically.
La Santé prisoners began shouting: “Welcome, Sarkozy!”
Once the farewell moment was completed, Sarkozy was transported about five miles away to La Santé prison, where he arrived just before 10 AM. According to friends, he had brought books to his 9-square-meter cell, including Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel “The Count of Monte Cristo.” Other inmates, as Sarkozy was led to the prison’s VIP section, began shouting: “Welcome, Sarkozy!”
Before Sarkozy was led to prison, he posted a message on X to the French people, declaring that he considers himself innocent and condemning the “expression of revenge.”
Judge Natalie Gavarino had found Sarkozy guilty, as he “allowed his close associates to act with the purpose of obtaining financial support from the Libyan regime,” sentencing him to the maximum penalty of five years and a fine of 100,000 euros.
