Following the encouraging health progress of the 15-year-old who was taken off life support after a severe heat stroke episode, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis praised the healthcare system’s performance, stating that “the National Health System received top marks last week.” The minister also discussed developments in the field of transplants, revealing that the new Transplant Center at Onasio Hospital will begin operations in October, with specialized staff already transferred from abroad. “We plan to perform liver transplants on children in Greece during the first half of 2026,” he declared, emphasizing that the country has made significant progress in the transplantation sector.
Georgiadis on transplants: Trust the NHS – Congratulations to Niki Kerameos
The minister Adonis Georgiadis then congratulated Niki Kerameos and her family following her mother’s organ donation after her passing. “We received five organs. We had five successful operations. It’s very important that this is heard as an example to follow,” he emphasized.
Regarding the 15-year-old’s case, Mr. Georgiadis sent a message to citizens to trust the NHS. “Dimitris was a very difficult medical case, as he was transferred to the health center in a comatose state. For the transplant to be performed, he needed to be in an absolutely stable condition. The NHS achieved this, which is why he was accepted in Italy. First his life was saved in Greece, and then he was transferred to Italy,” he added.
Regarding the transfer, he noted that “this is the first case where we used the air ambulance donated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Until a few months ago, we didn’t have such an aircraft in Greece.” He concluded by adding that “no one disputes that the National Health System needs further strengthening, but it handled this case with great success almost on the same day.”
