Turkey today presented a plan for marine parks in the Aegean Sea, publishing a related map through Ankara’s Maritime Law Center. According to SKAI’s correspondent in Constantinople, Manolis Kostidis, the proposed marine park in the Aegean is located outside territorial waters west of Imbros and Tenedos, between Samothrace and Lemnos.

In the Eastern Mediterranean, the marine park excludes Kastellorizo as the marine park begins northeast of Rhodes and extends all the way to the waters off the Gulf of Antalya.

With this decision, Turkey raises the political temperature and implements its threats by creating its own marine parks almost a month and a half after Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the creation of two new National Marine Parks, one in the Ionian Sea and one in the Aegean Sea.
Turkey has reacted strongly to Greece’s decision, characterizing it as an attempt to disrupt the status quo. Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated in an announcement that “in the coming days, Turkey will announce its plans for environmental protection in its maritime areas.”
