Electronic transactions per capita in Greece increased at nearly double the rate of the Eurozone average during the second half of 2024. In total, 3.04 billion electronic transactions were completed in the country, marking a 13.6% increase compared to 2023. This translates to 289 transactions per capita, up from 254 the previous year. For comparison, the Eurozone average for electronic transactions per capita was 420.5, up 7.5% from 2023.
The value of electronic transactions in Greece in 2024 rose from €61.1 billion to €67.7 billion, with the increase concentrated mainly in the second half, following the completion of POS integration with business cash register systems. This trend helped the country significantly reduce its gap from the Eurozone average, reaching 69% from 65% in 2023.
Particularly significant was the increase in card payments, which rose 14% in number and 9% in value. According to Bank of Greece data, 2024 recorded a total of 2.511 billion card transactions, with their value reaching €112 billion, up 9% compared to 2023 when it was €102 billion.
At the European level, according to the European Central Bank, the total number of contactless payments in the eurozone during the second half of 2024 increased by 8.6%, reaching 77.6 billion, while the total value increased by 3.8% to €116.9 trillion.
