A Ukrainian drone attack on a playground in the Russian Belgorod region on Sunday (August 2) killed a 13-year-old girl and injured two others, aged 7 and 9, according to acting regional governor Alexander Gusev, who condemned what he called a “barbaric terrorist attack,” announcing the incident via Telegram.
Rescuers rushed to the scene but could not save the girl
According to the regional governor, a drone struck a location next to a playground in the village of Printсhevka, near the border. Rescuers who rushed to the scene were unable to save the 13-year-old girl, who had sustained severe injuries, the official said. Two other girls, aged 7 and 9, were transported to a hospital where they were admitted and are currently receiving medical treatment, he added.
Russia’s children’s rights commissioner condemns the strike
Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, condemned what she described as “yet another inhumane terrorist act by the Kyiv regime.”
It is worth noting that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants against Lvova-Belova, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin, for the alleged war crime of the unlawful forced deportation of children from Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian armed forces. Moscow has rejected the charges.
At least 8 killed in Ukrainian strikes across Russia
In total, at least eight people were killed across Russia on Saturday in Ukrainian strikes, with targets including a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, the country’s largest online retailer, according to Russian authorities. On Sunday morning (August 2), the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 635 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted and shot down.
