For the third consecutive day, the massive wildfire raging across West Attica continues to burn, with the most difficult front now centered in the Kandili area of the Megara municipality, where, according to reports, the fire has broken into warehouses at the Firing Range. Early on Monday, August 3, emergency alert system 112 was reactivated, ordering residents in the areas of Agia Skepi, Kandili, and Botsika to evacuate immediately toward Nea Peramos.
West Attica wildfire: “We urgently need more aerial support”
Speaking exclusively to parapolitika.gr, the deputy mayor of the Nea Peramos municipal district, Konstantinos Botoúnas, described the situation as a major catastrophe and issued an urgent call for aerial firefighting reinforcements. “There has been massive destruction. We urgently need more aerial means,” he stated, stressing that strong winds in the area are continuously shifting the fire front and making conditions increasingly unpredictable.
He explained that machinery deployed by the Attica Region is currently operating at the Firing Range, cutting firebreaks with the assistance of private contractors, in an effort to halt the fire’s advance. At this stage, the fire front is burning primarily through dry brush and grassland; however, the greatest fear remains that the blaze could cross to the opposite side and spread into new territory.
Earlier, Megara Mayor Panagiotis Margetis had told parapolitika.gr that firefighting forces had successfully protected the Holy Monastery of Agia Skepi and residential properties in the area, while the Louba front has now been brought under control. However, as he had emphasized, the front toward Agia Skepi and Kandili remains the most challenging and unpredictable.
