The role of the Council of Europe, the challenges of artificial intelligence and developments in the Western Balkans were at the center of the meeting held at the Maximos Mansion between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Petra Bayr. During the discussion, particular emphasis was placed on safeguarding democratic institutions, the rule of law and human rights, while both sides exchanged views on the need for European regulations around artificial intelligence and the protection of minors.

The Prime Minister emphasized the role that the Council of Europe plays in safeguarding democratic institutions, the rule of law and human rights, while making special reference to the presence of Theodoros Roussopoulos in the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly, highlighting his contribution at a particularly critical juncture for Europe.

Petra Bayr, who assumed the presidency in January 2026, congratulated Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the performance of the Greek economy and for improving citizens’ standard of living, as she mentioned during the meeting. The discussion also addressed the challenges created by the rapid development of artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on protecting minors and establishing European safety and oversight regulations.
At the same time, both sides exchanged views on the progress of Western Balkan countries and the importance of continuing reforms and European support for the region, at a time when stability in the Balkans remains a strategic priority for the European Union.
