Alexis Tsipras took the paper from a girl who crossed Thiseio Square, but did not articulate the name of his new party. He didn’t say it, that is, as he looked at the paper smiling and with a gleam in his eyes. After a few seconds, which theater people would characterize as a “Chekhovian pause,” the camera fell on the paper. Thus ELAS was born, ironically, since the acronym of the Greek Left Alliance coincides with both that of the Greek People’s Liberation Army and that of the Greek Police. The former prime minister was clear when he said he wants to unite the main parts of the Left, essentially confirming his desire to lead the progressive world in the effort with the primary goal of the elections expected to take place in 2027. It should be noted that the speech of the former SYRIZA leader was preceded by actors Marianna Toumasatou -who even wondered sarcastically and “targeting” Maria Karystianou, whether she should release doves from her hands- and Emilios Cheilakis. It’s worth noting that before the moment with the paper, a video “played” showing it being transmitted to people of all ages.

Alexis Tsipras: The seven commitments
Alexis Tsipras spoke about his party’s seven commitments, which he described concisely: “With today’s Declaration we address all Greek women and all Greek men and present before them seven basic commitments: First: We commit to a life with Dignity. For a shield against high prices and strength in work. For decent wages. For supporting workers against employer arbitrariness. For inclusion and Equality. For equal participation of people with disabilities. For full gender equality and securing LGBTQ+ rights. For an immigration policy that guarantees both border security and humanitarian reception and equal inclusion of refugees and immigrants in education and the labor market.
Second commitment: We commit to a strong Democracy without Impunity. For transparency and control at every level of power and public money. For accountability everywhere by strengthening institutions that protect the rights of every citizen. For a state that guarantees the security of basic goods and citizens’ rights.
Third commitment: We commit to a strong Economy of Fair Development and Dignity. For changing the productive model with emphasis on agricultural production and processing. For innovation and regional development. For tax justice and reducing taxation on wage labor. For modern financing institutions and rules for banks.
Fourth commitment: We commit to a Social State of Rights against profiteering. To make health, education, social protection, housing and culture rights for all again, not privileges for few. For decent salaries for doctors, nurses, teachers and professors. For affordable housing for young couples. So that all children in the country have a place in daycare centers. For free organized care for elderly with chronic diseases. For everyone’s right to Culture and support for people of art and creation.
