During his conversation with journalist Giorgos Kouvaras at the “Circle of Ideas” conference, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis was asked to answer what would be the first phone call he would make in the event of a hot incident with Turkey in the Aegean.
The first call would be to the Chief of General Staff, emphasized Giorgos Gerapetritis
“What is the first phone call? Is it to Kimberly Guilfoyle? Is it to Macron? Is it to Fidan? Who is it to?” the journalist asked, receiving the answer: “The first phone call would be to the Chief of General Staff, because our Armed Forces have the autonomy to stand on their own without any external assistance.”
Obviously, Giorgos Kouvaras clarified that he was referring to the first call outside Greece. “Strategic autonomy starts from the homeland and then escalates. So, the first call would be there. The rest of the calls would be where they need to be. They would be to our partners in the European Union, to our partners in the United States, to our partners everywhere around the world,” answered Giorgos Gerapetritis, adding: “But I want to tell you something. This type of chronic external dependence of the country, this worship of alliances, is not something I fully embrace. Of course we must build our international alliances. It is a structural characteristic of a multipolar world. On the other hand, this cannot create complacency. The only capability you must structurally develop is the ability to have defense in your own hands. And I think we have secured this. Now you asked me about the West. I continue to believe, and I believe it ideologically, that the West remains unified and the Atlantic Alliance will remain resilient.”
