New details are emerging in the murder case of 20-year-old Portuguese tourist Luís Miguel Varela Mendes, who was killed at a bar in Ksamil, Albania, following the testimony of the 29-year-old suspect. Sokrat Vata, 29, appeared before investigators and presented his own account of the events leading up to the fatal attack.

According to what Vata reportedly told investigators, everything started when a brawl broke out among tourists who were under the influence of alcohol. He claimed he attempted to calm the situation down, as there were other customers present at the venue. However, Vata alleged that as he tried to intervene and defuse the tension, the situation quickly escalated into a full-blown altercation, as reported by Top Channel.

“The knife belonged to the 20-year-old Portuguese tourist”
Vata also denied bringing the knife used in the fatal stabbing to the scene. On the contrary, the accused claimed that the weapon belonged to the victim. “The knife that killed the 20-year-old Portuguese was the victim’s own knife,” Vata reportedly told authorities, according to his statement.
Security camera footage placed under the microscope
Meanwhile, Albanian police have seized all available security camera footage from the venue in order to reconstruct the events minute by minute, leading up to the deadly confrontation.
The footage examined so far has captured the initial moments of the altercation, but does not provide a complete picture. The movement of those present and the chaos that unfolded during the brawl have made it difficult to fully document what happened.
Critically, the moment of the fatal stabbing does not appear to have been clearly captured on any of the footage available to authorities, as the area where the attack allegedly took place was far from the cameras and poorly lit.

The DJ called the police
It is worth noting that the first emergency call to authorities was made by the DJ working at the nightclub where the brawl began, according to information cited by Politiko.al. According to the same source, at approximately 5:15 a.m. on August 18, a call was placed to the police reporting a fight between tourists at the club and stating that there were injured individuals on the scene.
The role of the security personnel
Authorities are also scrutinizing the role of the four individuals who were working as security staff at the venue. Among them was Mojsid Matushai, an employee of the Regional Directorate of Border and Migration Police in Gjirokastër, a municipal police officer, and two other employees from public service agencies.
One of the four security staff members, police officer Mojsid Matushai, is the individual who allegedly helped the suspect, Sokrat Vata, flee the scene. The officer reportedly transported him by car to the center of Ksamil before returning to the resort complex.
The suspect then allegedly made contact with two Turkish tourists, asking them for help to leave the area. The two Turkish nationals — identified as Nuh Mahmutoğlu and Ezgi Perlak — were subsequently arrested. According to their statements, they had met Vata previously and had paid him on prior occasions to act as their escort.
A timeline of the fatal confrontation
It is recalled that the incident initially unfolded inside the nightclub, located within a tourist resort complex in Ksamil, before spilling out onto the venue’s beach area, where the 20-year-old was found dead beside sun loungers. Reports indicate that his body remained at the scene for at least three hours.
According to the authorities’ investigation, a violent altercation broke out involving several individuals, during which Sokrat Vata, 29, allegedly attacked the young Portuguese man with a sharp object, inflicting multiple stab wounds to his chest and back. Authorities are still investigating the possible involvement of other individuals in the fight, and according to information gathered so far, another man is alleged to have punched the 20-year-old during the brawl.
