Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has ignited fresh controversy with his Instagram post featuring an AI-generated video showing him wearing a leather mini skirt and women’s underwear, mockingly commenting on influencers participating in protests against a major tourism investment project on the Adriatic coast. He reposted the controversial video on his Instagram account, accompanied by the phrase: “Whoever made this, well done to them.” The post, as expected, sparked intense debate on social media and in the country’s public discourse.
Edi Rama: The post that reignited public confrontation
The video references statements Edi Rama made on June 7, during a public event, where he criticized bloggers and influencers supporting mobilizations against the controversial tourism project, which is connected to Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
The investment project has sparked reactions, as part of it is planned to be built in a protected environmental area. During demonstrations in Tirana, participants often appear with paper pink flamingo figures, one of the protected migratory bird species in the area.
In his speech, Rama argued that several influencers earn significant income from promoting themselves on social media without paying corresponding taxes. He also used a satirical tone, stating that “bloggers provoke each other, one dressed as a flamingo and another dressed like me, to see who will win.”
The Albanian Prime Minister had previously argued that many of the influencers participating in the mobilizations primarily seek publicity, without knowing the case’s aspects in depth. His new post, however, reignited the public confrontation surrounding the controversial investment project and the government’s stance toward the reactions it provokes.
