The committee on Constitutional Reform concluded its work on Wednesday afternoon. New Democracy (ND) voted in favor of the full proposal it submitted, with rapporteur Evripidis Stylianidis noting that members who differed on individual articles still support the overall proposal, reserving the right to state their positions in the plenary session and decide their course of action based on freedom of conscience. “In principle, however, New Democracy says ‘yes’ to the entire package of the proposal.”
PASOK announced it would vote “present” — effectively abstaining — on fifteen articles of the Constitution during the vote. These are articles that, while part of New Democracy’s proposal, PASOK has presented its own alternative positions on.
The articles in question are: Article 5, Article 14, Article 15, Article 16, Article 17, Article 21, Article 24, Article 29, Article 44 §2, Article 51 §4, Article 86, Article 89, Article 90 §5, Article 101A, and Article 102 (abstain).
The remaining articles included in New Democracy’s proposal will be voted down by PASOK.
The proposal as a whole was rejected by all other opposition parties — the Communist Party (KKE), SYRIZA, Greek Solution, and Niki.
