A comprehensive electronic surveillance system spanning the entire length of Greece’s northern border has been announced by Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, during his visit to Florina. This new technological shield forms part of the national strategy to fully upgrade security and achieve more effective border control across the country.
According to the Minister, the new plan calls for the expansion of electronic surveillance systems from Igoumenitsa and Sagiada in Thesprotia all the way to the Evros river, covering Thrace and Eastern, Central, and Western Macedonia. The Minister stated that this initiative is part of an ongoing effort in recent years “to improve the overall security climate in the country, so that citizens and their children feel safe and can move freely around their city and their neighborhood.”
He emphasized that this is the true measure of success — the great asset of city safety and national security — as the Police oversee, monitor, and protect the country’s borders.
Meeting with Greek Police leadership in Western Macedonia
During an official operational briefing attended by the General Police Coordinator of Northern Greece, Deputy General Georgios Papadopoulos, the General Regional Police Director of Western Macedonia, Brigadier Nikolaos Exarchos, senior officers, and staff of the Western Macedonia Regional Police Directorate, the Minister of Citizen Protection commended the assembled leadership for the significant work they have accomplished, noting that the region of Western Macedonia is now among the safest areas in the country.
He also addressed road safety, highlighting the excellent work being done in the region to reduce traffic accidents and protect human life. He made particular mention of the important efforts in the area of Community Policing, which he described as a key priority.
The Minister further noted that the four Domestic Violence Response Offices operating within the respective Police Directorates of the Regional Police Directorate handle hundreds of cases, saving lives and protecting victims. He also praised the significant contribution of the Juvenile Protection Offices in safeguarding minors and managing cases of juvenile delinquency.
Chrysochoidis: “The safety of our cities is our top priority”
“I am here in Florina to reaffirm our will and our commitment that citizen safety and the safety of our cities are our top priority. We will continue working to become even more effective, so that citizens feel even safer than they do today. We are constantly vigilant, mobilized, and maintaining a permanent presence,” Minister Chrysochoidis concluded.
The Minister subsequently held a meeting with the Regional Deputy Governor of the Florina Regional Unit, Athanasios Taskas. His visit to the area concluded with a meeting with the Mayor of Florina, Vasileios Giannakis.
