Responding to criticism from the party’s internal opposition, SYRIZA leader Sokrates Famellos reaffirmed the party’s commitment to participate in the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) during a meeting of the Political Secretariat. Regarding SYRIZA’s political activity, Famellos outlined five key priorities for the party over the next two months.
Famellos: “Unprecedented scheming — they must respect our democratic rules”
At the same time, Famellos sent a clear message to the party’s internal opposition, stating: “Constantly invoking the need for meetings to re-discuss decisions we have already made is unprecedented scheming that goes against the will of SYRIZA’s members.” He added: “We are here to work together as comrades, as we agreed. I am calling on all party officials to respect the Central Committee’s decision and our democratic rules. The only ones who have nothing to worry about from this inward-looking and dismissive debate are the establishment and the Mitsotakis regime. The coming months are critical for the future of Greek society. We must not miss this opportunity,” the SYRIZA leader concluded.
Sokrates Famellos: SYRIZA’s 5 priorities
1. Political action and the presence of SYRIZA-PS on pressing current affairs issues — particularly regarding the Rule of Law, Constitutional Revision, and the Local Government Code, as well as the cost of living, labour rights, and housing, all of which offer opportunities to build a broader social majority.
2. Participating in and encouraging progressive dialogue (e.g. the “Kosmos” conference). Emphasising the need for both realignment and unity. Serious steps toward unity within the progressive camp are essential — realignment alone is not enough. Progressive dialogue is also necessary to mature and socially consolidate a progressive programme.
3. Meetings with institutions and Chambers of Commerce from July onwards, and preparation for the TIF. Activation from August through participation in the TIF, with an updated economic programme and dialogue with productive bodies.
4. Utilising the Parliamentary Group in discussions on Constitutional Revision and broader issues throughout July and August. Opposition activities and policy proposals.
5. Coordinating the implementation of the Central Committee’s decision and monitoring political developments through the Executive Office, in accordance with the party’s statute, followed by an assessment of the decision’s implementation at a new Central Committee session in September — as provided for in the party’s statute — following the party’s participation in the TIF.
The SYRIZA leader also directed sharp criticism at officials from the internal opposition, stressing: “It is unacceptable that we make a democratic decision and then, from day one, certain party officials act as though they didn’t understand it — or present their own views, which were in the minority, as if they were the actual decision. This runs counter to our democratic rules, the will of our members, and the decision we reached.”
“Constantly invoking the need for meetings to re-discuss decisions we have already made is unprecedented scheming that goes against the will of SYRIZA’s members,” Famellos stressed.
