An arrest warrant for Dimitris Avramopoulos has been issued by the Belgian prosecutor’s office in connection with the Qatargate scandal, a case that previously also implicated former MEP Eva Kaili, as part of the ongoing investigation into the matter. According to sources, the warrant will be forwarded to the Greek Parliament, where the legally prescribed procedures will be followed. The same sources indicate that there is no question of Avramopoulos being arrested before his parliamentary immunity is lifted.
Greek judicial authorities already informed of the arrest warrant for Dimitris Avramopoulos
According to government sources, once the warrant is transmitted to Parliament and a criminal offence is established, proceedings to lift Dimitris Avramopoulos’s parliamentary immunity will move forward. Sources indicate that the competent Greek judicial authorities have already been made aware of the warrant.
Under the established legal procedure, the materials and evidence submitted by the Belgian authorities are forwarded by the Athens Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office to the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office. The relevant file will then be referred to Parliament through the Ministry of Justice, in order to initiate the prescribed procedures for examining the request to lift parliamentary immunity. Meanwhile, judicial sources report that Avramopoulos visited the Athens Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office earlier today, though no further details regarding the purpose of his visit have been disclosed.
It is worth recalling that from the moment the Qatargate investigation first came to light, Dimitris Avramopoulos firmly rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing, maintaining that all of his actions were carried out within the bounds of the law and with full transparency.
