A different, more personal portrait of Giorgos Mazonakis — one far removed from the spotlight and the public image the world knew — was shared by his close associate Nikos Michalos during an appearance on Parapolitika 90.1’s show “Aerologies.”
Nikos Michalos worked closely with Giorgos Mazonakis for more than eight months, maintaining — as he described — almost daily contact with the singer, both over the phone and through in-person meetings and lengthy conversations. Their acquaintance, however, stretched back much further, to around 2004–2005. Their paths crossed again professionally years later, and what began as a working relationship gradually evolved into something with far greater depth than a typical professional connection.
Nikos Michalos on Giorgos Mazonakis: “He was extremely tired”
Speaking about the state the singer had been in during his final period, Nikos Michalos painted a picture of a man who was deeply exhausted and quite alone. “During the last eight to nine months that I experienced with him on a daily basis — hours of phone calls and conversations — I think Giorgos was extremely tired,” he said.
According to Michalos, that exhaustion wasn’t necessarily visible when Mazonakis stepped onto the stage. But behind the energy of his performances was a man going through an exceptionally difficult time. “I think he was also a little lonely,” he said pointedly, noting that the singer was not someone who opened up easily. Michalos connected this image to everything that had preceded it in Mazonakis’s personal and family life, saying he gave the impression of a man waiting for a difficult chapter to come to a close.
“It was as if he was waiting for something. As if he was waiting for all this hardship to end, for all of it to be over, so he could live a little better and more comfortably.”

Nikos Michalos also spoke at length about Mazonakis’s relationship with his audience, describing scenes that, he argued, are rarely seen anymore in Greek entertainment. As he revealed, even though the nightclub opened its doors at around 11 p.m., there were fans waiting outside from 10 p.m. — simply hoping to catch a glimpse of the singer’s car arriving, or perhaps receive a “good evening” from him.
“What we saw this year with Giorgos — the venue opening at 11 and at quarter to 10 there were already people lined up outside hoping his car might pull up and he’d say hello to them — I haven’t seen that in years,” he said, drawing a parallel between that kind of popular devotion and the connection that only a handful of sports legends have managed to forge with their audiences.
He also spoke of fans who wept during his performances and of admirers who sought out even the slightest opportunity to be near him.
The concert after which he returned to his dressing room in tears
One of the most personal moments Nikos Michalos shared for the first time involved a Giorgos Mazonakis concert, after which the singer returned to his dressing room visibly overwhelmed.
“The concert ended and he came back and he was crying. He went into the dressing room and he was crying,” he said, describing a side of Mazonakis that stood in stark contrast to the explosive, larger-than-life figure who had been on stage just minutes before. That particular night, he explained, had left the singer deeply moved.
The remark he made — and that was never forgotten
Michalos also revealed an incident that, he said, illustrated the way Mazonakis understood respect — both toward his collaborators and toward those around him. At one point, Michalos referred to the singer in front of others using only his first name. Mazonakis gently corrected him, asking — in front of everyone — that he use “Mr. Mazonakis” in public, while clarifying that between the two of them, they could speak however they liked.
What stayed with Michalos most was the way the correction was delivered — without offense and without making him feel small, but in a manner that, as he put it, immediately made him understand the reasoning behind it.
“It was lovely that people could see there was a certain grace to him. He corrected me in a way that left me feeling no worse for it,” he said.
“He had a sharp mind and quick thinking”
Beyond the artist, Nikos Michalos also spoke about how Mazonakis operated in everyday life and in professional discussions. He described him as a man of sharp intellect and quick thinking, someone capable of taking a conversation in an entirely unexpected direction.
As he recalled, they would discuss even simple ideas around a venue — everything from the food to a potential live performance — and Mazonakis would approach every suggestion in his own distinctive way.
“Giorgos would take you somewhere else entirely. He had quick thinking and real sharpness. He never made you feel small about your work, and that matters enormously,” he said.
For Nikos Michalos, that was precisely where much of what made Giorgos Mazonakis so unique truly lived — in the personality behind the artist, in the way he perceived people, in his different way of thinking, and above all in a relationship with his audience that had long since surpassed the boundaries of an ordinary successful career.
As his close associate told Parapolitika 90.1, what had been built around Mazonakis “cannot be compared to anyone” — and would be extraordinarily difficult to replicate.
