An emergency inspection by a team from the Athens Medical Association (ISA) is currently underway at the location where Giorgos Mazonakis allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest that led to his death, as announced by Giorgos Patoulis. “The sudden and tragic death of Giorgos Mazonakis raises legitimate questions that must be answered,” Patoulis stated. “We will not act as forensic pathologists or judges,” he added, while reminding that “as the Athens Medical Association, we have a specific institutional responsibility — to ensure that every medical procedure is carried out in a legally authorized and properly licensed facility.” “For the ISA, patient safety is non-negotiable,” stressed the president of the Athens Medical Association.
Full statement by Giorgos Patoulis on the death of Giorgos Mazonakis
“The sudden and tragic death of Giorgos Mazonakis raises legitimate questions that must be answered. We will not act as forensic pathologists or judges. The cause of death and any liability will emerge through the appropriate legal processes. As the Athens Medical Association, we have a specific institutional responsibility — to ensure that every medical procedure is carried out in a legally authorized and properly licensed facility, meeting all required conditions for patient safety.
For this reason, I immediately ordered an emergency inspection, which is already underway by an ISA team at the location where the incident occurred. At the same time, we are reviewing the facility’s operating license, its permitted activities, and the medical procedures being performed there. We will not prejudge the outcome, but we will make no concessions either. For the ISA, patient safety is non-negotiable.
Medical practice demands scientific competence, legal compliance, and above all, respect for human life. My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Giorgos Mazonakis. The facts and the competent authorities now have the floor.”
