The Greek FBI is taking over the investigation into the helicopter crash at Exambela on the island of Sifnos, which occurred on Monday (17/08). Specifically, following a prosecutor’s order, the preliminary inquiry into the aviation accident — in which three people lost their lives — has been transferred to the Organized Crime Directorate.
Sifnos helicopter crash: Investigation upgraded to specialized preliminary inquiry
This development marks a significant escalation of the investigation, elevating it to the level of a specialized preliminary inquiry. Authorities are continuing their efforts to shed light on the case, placing every aspect of the aviation accident under the microscope — from technical data and flight conditions to any potential oversights that could be linked to the crash.
According to sources, an urgent prosecutor’s order has emphasized that investigating the circumstances of the accident requires specialized knowledge and technical expertise. The order also provides for the assistance of legally appointed expert witnesses and technical advisors acting on behalf of the victims’ families.
What is at the center of the investigation
The authorities’ investigation is not limited solely to the crash site. A series of actions requiring specialized expertise and experience will be necessary, with particular emphasis placed on ongoing communication with all parties involved and the relevant agencies.
Among the entities at the center of the investigation are foreign embassies and insurance companies, which significantly increases the volume and complexity of the preliminary inquiry process. It is worth noting that the Greek FBI had also previously led the investigation into the mid-air collision between two helicopters near Psatha.
The involvement of EODASSAM (the Hellenic Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Safety Board), as well as any other agency deemed necessary in the course of the investigation, is also anticipated.
