Grigoris Kizas, a volunteer firefighter, fought the wildfire raging through Vilia to protect his neighbors’ properties from destruction. Yet while he was out saving others’ homes, his own house burned to the ground. He is reported to have saved more than 10 homes in the area.
“Unfortunately, the tragic irony is this… We are volunteers — we have saved our neighbors’ homes, we have saved their properties, but yesterday there was no one there to save mine. It was left at the mercy of the fire, it burned without anyone even trying to stop it,” the volunteer told Alpha TV.
“Unfortunately, only the walls are left standing,” he added with heartfelt pain, as the images of his devastated home are truly shocking.
