A tragic outcome unfolded following the incident that occurred on Saturday morning (June 27) at a shooting range in Malevizi, Heraklion, as the 43-year-old woman who had suffered serious injuries to her neck from a gunshot wound died during surgery, despite the superhuman efforts of doctors to stabilize her.
The woman had initially been rushed to Venizeleio Hospital in an extremely critical condition, having suffered a cardiac arrest during transport, from which paramedics managed to resuscitate her. She subsequently suffered a second cardiac arrest, with doctors performing CPR for approximately one hour before successfully reviving her again, after which she was taken urgently into surgery, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
According to the hospital’s director, Kostas Dandoulakis, following a CT scan, it was determined that the 43-year-old required immediate surgery. Despite the extraordinary efforts of medical staff to keep her alive, she passed away in the operating room. The woman sustained severe injuries to her neck and head, and authorities are investigating the possibility that the wound was self-inflicted.

According to information that has come to light, the 43-year-old, who was originally from Thessaloniki, was visiting the shooting range for the first time and held a temporary firearms permit. Under circumstances that are still under investigation, she sustained a serious gunshot wound to the neck from the weapon she was holding, triggering an emergency response from authorities and the national ambulance service (EKAB).
Police authorities are investigating all possible scenarios surrounding the incident. Based on information available so far, investigators are examining whether the shooting was an accident caused by an accidental discharge of the weapon, or whether it was a deliberate self-inflicted gunshot wound, meaning a suicide attempt. The injury occurred in the presence of a range supervisor, and witness statements along with the findings of the ongoing investigation are expected to shed light on the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
Fighting for her life until the very last moment
Doctors at Venizeleio Hospital made every possible effort to save the woman’s life. Despite repeated resuscitation attempts, surgical intervention, and an intense battle in the operating room, the 43-year-old could not be saved.
The Greek Police investigation is ongoing in order to determine the exact cause of the fatal incident.
