The wildfire in Akraifnio, Boeotia, triggered scenes reminiscent of a disaster movie on Monday afternoon, as the blaze spread rapidly due to powerful winds and came dangerously close to the Athens–Lamia national highway. Footage captured by passing drivers and local media outlets illustrates just how perilous the situation became, with vehicles forced to navigate through thick smoke and flames that had encroached upon the roadway itself. Authorities responded immediately, with the Fire Service continuously reinforcing its units to contain the fire’s spread and protect nearby residential areas. The situation remained critically dangerous for an extended period, as the fire burned across difficult terrain while winds shifted unpredictably in direction.

Fire in Akraifnio: Flames reach the national highway
The fire broke out in the Akraifnio area shortly after 3:00 PM and rapidly gained intensity. Strong winds acted as an accelerant, driving the fire front directly toward the national highway. Videos made public show trucks and passenger vehicles navigating extremely hazardous conditions, with flames just meters from the road surface. The footage caused widespread alarm, as for several minutes there was a serious risk both to drivers on the road and to the broader safety of the highway network. Emergency services moved swiftly to prevent any accidents and ensure the safety of civilians in the area.
Traffic restrictions and emergency alert 112
Traffic police moved to close a section of the national highway after conditions were deemed extremely dangerous. Vehicles were redirected through alternative side roads, with drivers urged to follow official instructions carefully. Specifically, traffic restrictions were implemented in both directions between the Thebes interchange and the Kastro interchange. At the same time, Greece’s emergency alert system, 112, sent a warning message to residents of Akraifnio, urging them to remain on high alert. Authorities closely monitored the fire’s movement amid fears it could advance toward inhabited areas. The early warning was deemed essential, as conditions changed constantly and the strong winds created significant uncertainty about the fire’s trajectory.

Massive firefighting mobilization
The firefighting operation was deployed on a large scale. A total of 118 firefighters were on the ground, supported by six infantry units and 27 vehicles. Aerial support included 11 aircraft and three helicopters conducting continuous water drops, with one helicopter dedicated to coordinating the overall operation. Firefighting forces were continually reinforced as the blaze remained active, with particular emphasis placed on preventing the fire from spreading into residential areas and protecting critical infrastructure. Additionally, by order of the Fire Service Chief, units of the Central Greece Regional Fire Command were placed on general standby.
Heightened concern across Boeotia
The major fire in Akraifnio broke out just hours after another fire had ignited in the Eleonas area of Thebes, further intensifying authorities’ concerns. The simultaneous outbreak of multiple fires, combined with adverse weather conditions, created an exceptionally challenging operational environment. Firefighting forces remain on heightened alert, while emergency services continue to closely monitor the situation in order to respond immediately to any re-ignition or new outbreaks.
