Police and the 65-year-old Italian suspect in the double murder arrived Thursday afternoon, June 11, at the house where the massacre took place, claiming the lives of a mother and her son in Longos, Aigio. The middle-aged man vehemently denies the murder charges, which is why, as reported by MEGA, no crime scene reconstruction took place at the house. Since the 65-year-old is not confessing, the reconstruction was not feasible, so police conducted a new examination instead. An eyewitness, however, spoke to MEGA about the conditions that prevailed after the double murder. He described how the Italian was shouting “morto” (dead) and was in a state of extreme agitation. The witness was the first to discover Olympios and his mother Maria dead, describing that “she was just lying there.” “I was in Aigio on my own business. I had passed by the house at 11 am, everything was closed but they’re usually closed because they wake up late. Around quarter to 12, he called me and said ‘quickly Dimitris, come home’. Before I reached his house, I get another call and it’s him again,” says the couple’s friend.
Double murder in Aigio: Like a father
According to information, the 65-year-old Italian was like a father to Olympios, who had lost his biological father from an early age, which adds drama to the story. Reports suggest he went a few days earlier to repair the broken flopper, the weapon found at the double murder scene. Moreover, as Giorgos Kalliakmanus, honorary president of the Police Officers Union of N/A Attica, mentioned, the Italian allegedly asked the repairman if it kills. The latter answered that “it kills.”
Authorities emphasize that the Italian’s testimony shows a man with diminished faculties. He claims he was sleeping elsewhere, that he didn’t realize what happened, allegedly the mother and son sometimes slept in the same room, but besides the stabbings there was also gunfire. Didn’t the Italian, who says he was sleeping, hear anything? According to the report, the knife police found in the flower pot had no connection to the murder, however the knife used was found under the murdered mother’s body, who received over 20 stab wounds. Police report they didn’t find the 65-year-old Italian’s fingerprints on the knife, however they believe it was “washed clean” by the large amount of blood the woman lost. Indeed, one question raised was how the 54-year-old’s blood was found on the laptop. Certainly, material found under her fingernails will be crucial evidence, as will the gunpowder residue test.
“He wouldn’t tell me, he was crying”
“I went to go inside but the door was locked. He opened it for me, I was asking him on the small balcony what happened, he was shouting, Dimitris, Dimitris. I was asking where Olympios was, he wouldn’t tell me, he was crying. I didn’t ask about Maria because I assumed Maria had something wrong,” the friend said about the scene. The man spoke both by phone and on camera, and what he says are pieces that complete the picture of the crime scene. As he characteristically said: “We go into the house together, I see the child’s door. I go to push it, it wouldn’t open, then I realized Maria was behind it. I put my head in, I look at the child’s bed. He was on the bed, covered, all the way up. Then I make a movement, with my head, there were broken glasses below. There were blood stains and then I see Maria.”
“As soon as I came out I called 166. He didn’t speak to me at all. I give details. I tell him I’m calling the police, again he showed no objection. After I called the police, I asked him what happened,” he continued.
The property
According to the report, the murderer shoots Olympios in the temple and then in the chest, stabs him – something Nikos Evangelatos said caused his death – and then stabs his mother. The Italian, as reported on MEGA, allegedly left the room where he slept with his wife because he was snoring and couldn’t sleep, however he didn’t hear the gunshots. He said he found his partner and her son after hanging his washed underwear on the fence outside the house.
In the local community they speak of disagreement about a property. The mother wanted to give the money to her son, the son wanted to live in Germany and the Italian disagreed. Indeed, when he asked for money from the 54-year-old, she shut him down. The eyewitness knew the family and what he says matters: “His answer was ‘Dimitris, Maria went to sleep at 11 o’clock.’ He didn’t talk to me at all about Olympios. He (Italian) went to sleep shortly after and went to sleep next door. I looked but there were no signs of break-in. Exactly the words he told me were that he got up at 11 o’clock, went to the bathroom. Maria wasn’t in their room. He told me that Maria quite often, when the child came, would go and sleep or sit in the child’s room. He knocks on Olympios’ door. He opened the door and encountered what I saw too.”
Crucial testimony and evidence that shed light, authorities are evaluating the pieces from the testimony of the man who has spoken to authorities, and all of this together the Italian who continues to deny his involvement will be called to explain shortly. He will also meet with his lawyer, respected criminal lawyer Vasilis Nouleza, to determine his defense strategy.
