Three-year prison sentence for the mother
The Summary Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Chania sentenced the 25-year-old mother of the 3-year-old girl to 3 years in prison, without suspension. According to information from flashnews.gr, the defendant was tried for the charge of false testimony. She appeared in court without a lawyer and declared that she would represent herself. During the hearing procedure, the police officer who took the first statement from the 25-year-old defendant testified as a witness.
The witness reported that they were initially notified by a doctor at Chania hospital, who received the 3-year-old girl, and, as the doctor claimed, informed him that “the child was very beaten up and that the mother was there”. Subsequently, as the police officer testified during the preliminary investigation procedure, the mother allegedly initially falsely declared to police authorities that she lives in the Kounoupidiana area and then declared that she lives in Kalyves. However, as the witness reported, the mother also gave false testimony to police authorities about the number of her children. Initially, as he mentioned, the defendant declared that she has only one living child, the three-year-old girl, and two other children who have died. However, after investigation it was found that the defendant has four children.
Finally, he mentioned that the defendant gave different versions of how the girl was injured, initially stating that she was injured at the playground while playing, while later she mentioned that the child was with her sister and was injured while playing with her cousins. However, as the police officer reported, they could not locate her sister. Completing his testimony, the police officer mentioned that he notified the prosecutor, who ordered the arrest of the 25-year-old.
