Mount Olympus became the center of a difficult and highly demanding search and rescue operation over the past five days, following the disappearance of a 25-year-old Spanish climber in a treacherous snow-covered area near the “Louki” location. The recovery operation was completed on Tuesday afternoon, retrieving the body of the young man who had been found dead on Monday by rescue teams operating in the area. The search lasted several days and was conducted under extremely difficult conditions, as the location where the climber was found is characterized by steep terrain, precipitous slopes, and significant snow coverage. The operation involved firefighters, EMAK specialists, rescuers, volunteers, and helicopters from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in a massive mobilization to locate and transport the unfortunate young man.
Mount Olympus: The massive search and rescue operation
According to the Fire Service briefing, the Operations Center was notified on the afternoon of May 20th about the disappearance of the 25-year-old Spaniard in the broader Mount Olympus region. A large-scale search and rescue operation was immediately launched with the participation of significant forces.
The operation mobilized 14 firefighters from the Litochoro Fire Service, Mountain Search and Rescue Teams from the 2nd and 8th EMAK units, as well as the drone team from the Central Macedonia Regional Fire Department. Additionally, volunteers from the Hellenic Rescue Team participated in the searches, along with helicopters from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center.
The rescuers conducted extensive searches in inaccessible passages and areas with heavy snow cover, while weather and geomorphological conditions significantly hampered approach efforts. Finally, after days of searching, the 25-year-old’s body was located near the “Louki” position, in a particularly difficult spot. The recovery operation was deemed extremely demanding, as the location presented great danger to the rescue crews.
Body transport and authority investigations
After recovery, the body of the unfortunate Spaniard was transported by Joint Rescue Coordination Center helicopter to the 24th Armored Brigade helipad in Litochoro. An EKAB ambulance was waiting at the location to receive the body. The operation was completed during Tuesday afternoon hours, following days of mobilization by all involved forces. Competent authorities are now investigating the exact circumstances under which the 25-year-old climber lost his life.
