The Competition Commission is investigating the creation of a cartel by professional elevator installers and maintenance technicians, following a complaint from the Panhellenic Federation of Craftsmen Elevator Installers and Maintainers. The issue arose from the opening of the special platform for registering all elevators (https://elevator.mindev.gov.gr), with a deadline extension until November 30. For an elevator to be included in this specific registry, it must meet certain requirements, which means elevator upgrades or at least maintenance must be performed first.
According to official reports, specific companies are even resorting to threats to increase elevator upgrade costs, citing the impending compliance deadline and threatening penalty impositions. The cost is unbearable for many apartment buildings. While maintenance costs around €200, upgrade work can reach or exceed €8,000, especially in old buildings with worn equipment. This explains the “windfall” some are pursuing, seeing prospects for huge profits.
