METLEN, Thales Alenia Space — a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) — and Thales Hellas have announced a cooperation agreement aimed at jointly preparing for future opportunities within Greece’s defense space telecommunications program.
What the announcement says
According to the official announcement, the agreement combines the capabilities of all three companies with the goal of supporting Greece’s ambition to strengthen its sovereignty, security, and strategic autonomy in the space sector. At the same time, it aims to maximize the participation of the national industrial ecosystem through knowledge transfer and skills development, while contributing to the growth of high-added-value industrial and technological capabilities in Greece’s space sector.
Under the terms of the agreement, the partners will establish a framework to evaluate how their expertise and industrial capabilities could contribute to a future integrated defense space telecommunications system. Among the contributions METLEN will bring to the consortium through M Technologies, the agreement also foresees the potential use of METLEN’s gallium production capabilities in relevant supply chains for future satellites to be manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and delivered to customers worldwide. This prospect will complement Thales Alenia Space’s expertise in secure telecommunications satellites and related ground infrastructure.
The satellite solution proposed by Thales Alenia Space will be based on a telecommunications platform that has earned international recognition for its reliability, resilience, and speed of deployment. By leveraging technologies already proven in real space missions with a demonstrated track record of robustness, such a system could provide Greece with secure, sovereign, and interference-resistant communications — strengthening national security and space autonomy.
