Today, Friday, September 11th, is expected to be the last day with purely summer-like conditions, as tomorrow, Saturday, September 12th, the weather will change noticeably, with the first rains and isolated thunderstorms making their appearance and temperatures gradually beginning to fall. The change will become even more pronounced at the start of the new week, when the mercury will drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, while in Northern Greece minimum temperatures will fall to single digits.

As meteorologist Nikos Kanteres tells parapolitika.gr, today, Friday, will maintain the summer conditions seen in recent days, with sunshine, no rainfall, and temperatures higher than normal for this time of year.
From tomorrow, Saturday, September 12th, the weather picture changes. The first atmospheric disturbance moving in from Central Europe will reach the country, initially affecting Central Greece before pushing further north.
Weather: First rains and thunderstorms from Saturday — where they’ll hit
The disturbance will bring rain and isolated local thunderstorms, marking the first significant weather change after the high temperatures and prolonged sunshine of recent days.
“From Saturday, the first atmospheric disturbance arrives from Central Europe, which will initially affect Central Greece and then Northern Greece, bringing rain and a few isolated thunderstorms,” explains Mr. Kanteres.
The unsettled conditions will continue into Sunday, September 13th, with weather phenomena again concentrated mainly over Central and Northern Greece. The weather, however, will not be rainy throughout the entire day, as showers and isolated thunderstorms will alternate with sunny intervals.
When will temperatures drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius?
Alongside the return of rain, a noticeable drop in temperature is also on the way. The mercury will begin to fall over the weekend and will become more pronounced in the first days of the coming week.
According to Mr. Kanteres, the drop will be in the order of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, pushing temperatures even below the seasonal norm. As he points out, the average temperature for Athens in September is around 29 degrees Celsius — a level that the mercury is expected to fall below as cooler air masses move in.
Minimum temperatures to drop below 10°C — as low as 5°C in mountain areas
The change will be particularly felt during the early morning and overnight hours. In Northern Greece, as well as in mountainous areas of the mainland, minimum temperatures will drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Notably, in mountain regions, the mercury could fall as low as 5 degrees Celsius, giving a first sharp taste of autumn’s chill.
Unsettled weather to continue into the new week
The weather shift will not be limited to the weekend. Unsettled conditions are expected to persist throughout the new week, as cooler air masses trapped in the upper atmosphere will create conditions of thermal instability.
As a result, mainly during the midday and afternoon hours, localized showers and thunderstorms will develop over mainland Greece. These weather events, however, will not be continuous in nature, as they will be interspersed with clearer spells and periods of sunshine.
So, after today’s final summer’s day, Greece will gradually transition into a more autumnal pattern, with the return of rainfall and — above all — a significant drop in temperatures set to define the days ahead.
