167 fire-related arrests in just six months
This incident adds to a growing list of human-caused wildfires across Greece. According to data from the Hellenic Fire Service, between January 1st and July 6th, 2026, authorities have issued 527 administrative fines totalling €665,385.48, while 167 arrests have been made under the flagrante delicto procedure.
Of these, 154 arrests — accounting for 92.22% — relate to fires caused by negligence, while only 13, or 7.78%, involve deliberate arson.
The Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes has made clear that inspections are ongoing at full intensity and that responsibility is assigned promptly wherever violations are identified.
The Hellenic Fire Service is reminding the public that the vast majority of wildfires continue to be caused by human negligence, urging citizens to strictly follow fire safety measures and to avoid any action that could cause a spark or ignition — especially during the fire season.
