Six metallic spheres were found on a beach in northern Queensland, Australia, sparking widespread debate about their origin as authorities scramble to find answers. The Australian Space Agency (ASA) is working to determine where the objects came from, with speculation mounting that they could be space debris. According to the BBC, teams in protective suits were seen placing the spheres into hazardous materials containers under police guard, amid concerns that they may contain dangerous substances. A 50-meter exclusion zone was established around the site, and the public was warned not to touch the spheres if encountered, but to call emergency services immediately.
Rocket propellant tanks
Speculation online suggests the spheres may be propellant tanks from spacecraft, meaning they could potentially contain residue of a highly flammable or reactive substance. Mysterious objects have been discovered on Australian shores before. In 2023, India confirmed that a giant metallic dome that washed up on a beach in Western Australia near Perth had originated from one of its rockets. A spherical object similar to those found in Queensland was also discovered in a grassland area in Namibia in 2011, far from any populated areas. It was most likely a fuel tank or flexible bladder containing hydrazine — a toxic and highly hazardous rocket propellant.
