The specific reference to northern Cyprus in Turkey’s National Security Council under Erdoğan
According to the official communiqué, “Turkey, in its capacity as a guarantor power, is capable and determined to take every measure within the framework of international law for the security, peace and prosperity of Turkish Cypriots.” In this context, the Council emphatically underlined that “no fait accompli that would harm the rights and interests of the ‘TRNC’ and disturb the climate of peace in the Eastern Mediterranean will be permitted.”

“The National Security Council convened on June 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
During the meeting:
- The Council was briefed on activities carried out with dedication, determination and success, both domestically and abroad, against all kinds of threats and dangers directed at our national unity, solidarity and survival — primarily against the terrorist organizations PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETÖ and DAESH — as well as on recent international developments.
- Efforts toward achieving the goals of a “Turkey Free of Terrorism” and a “Terror-Free Region” — which are of critical importance for the future of our country and our region — were evaluated, and the firm determination to free our nation and our neighbors from the heavy burden of terrorism was reaffirmed.
- Operations conducted in the context of combating organized crime were reviewed; it was underlined that measures aimed at fully safeguarding the peace and security of all our citizens, especially our children and youth, will continue with resolve.
- It was emphasized that Turkey, in its capacity as a guarantor power, is capable and determined to take every measure within the framework of international law for the security, peace and prosperity of Turkish Cypriots. It was noted that no fait accompli that would harm the rights and interests of the ‘TRNC’ and disturb the climate of peace in the Eastern Mediterranean will be permitted.
- Satisfaction was expressed over the agreement reached between Iran and the United States, and the importance of not disrupting the progress of this process was stressed. It was underlined that Turkey will continue to actively contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
- Progress made toward establishing peace, stability and tranquility in Syria was welcomed with satisfaction, and it was underlined that our support for efforts to strengthen Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, as well as its development, will continue.
- It was noted that the aggressive actions of the Israeli administration — which continues to violate the ceasefire in Gaza, carries out settler terrorism in the West Bank, attacks the status of East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and violates Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity — are negatively affecting efforts to establish peace and stability in the region. The international community was called upon to adopt a principled stance toward the Israeli administration’s persistent disregard for universal human values and international law.
- Our firm determination to continue the strategic cooperation established with Iraq across all sectors, including with Iraq’s new government, was reaffirmed. Our support for maintaining a climate of stability and security in Iraq was emphasized.
- The current state of the Russia-Ukraine war was reviewed, and the parties bearing responsibility for the escalation of the conflict and its expansion — particularly in the Black Sea — were called upon to take immediate steps toward a just and lasting peace.
- Developments across the African continent were assessed; it was noted that Turkey will continue its support for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of friendly and brotherly African nations, as well as for establishing peace, stability and prosperity on the continent.
- Current developments aimed at strengthening peace, stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus were reviewed.”
