A remarkably rare fishing incident occurred at Mesangaloi beach, capturing the attention of the local community and recreational fishing enthusiasts alike. An amateur fisherman from Ampelonas, Larissa, fishing from the shore with a rod, managed after a persistent struggle to reel in a tripletail fish weighing over 8 kilograms — a species considered highly unusual for the area. According to reports, the fisherman felt an exceptionally powerful tug on his hook, triggering a demanding battle that lasted quite some time, pushing both his own endurance and his equipment to the limit.

The lucky angler felt a powerful pull on his rod, and the fight with the large fish lasted for quite some time, testing the limits of his gear. Successfully hauling it onto the sandy shore caused great excitement among bystanders who rushed over to get a closer look at the strange creature. According to paidis.com, experienced fishermen immediately identified the species as Lobotes surinamensis, more widely known as the tripletail fish. This marks the first official recorded sighting of this particular species in the Mesangaloi area.

What is the tripletail fish?
The tripletail is a tropical “migrant” that lives primarily in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. In recent years, due to rising water temperatures, it has been appearing with increasing frequency in the Mediterranean. Its name comes from the rear portion of its body — its large fins resemble three lobes, creating the illusion that the fish has three tails.
What makes this catch particularly remarkable is that such a large fish — over 8 kilograms — was landed with a rod from the shoreline. This is undeniably a true angling feat, as this species typically tends to inhabit deeper waters.
