The 65-year-old Italian man continues to deny involvement in the double murder case in Longos, Aigion, who was arrested on Wednesday, June 10th, charged with the premeditated double homicide of his 54-year-old partner and her 26-year-old son, as well as weapons law violations. The accused is expected to appear before an investigating judge on Friday, June 12th, with court-appointed lawyer Maria Iatropoulou handling his defense. Despite substantial incriminating evidence collected by authorities that led to his arrest, the alleged perpetrator of the double murder continues to present his own version of events that occurred inside the house in Longos, Aigion.
Aigion crime: The 65-year-old Italian’s explanation for the washed underwear
According to information from police sources, the 65-year-old claims he was sleeping on the living room couch when he woke up due to discomfort that forced him to go to the bathroom. Specifically, he says he had gastroenteritis, which he attributes to the stain on the washed underwear. Then, as he claims, he went back to sleep on the couch until he woke up around 10 AM. “Around 10 o’clock I went to our bedroom because we had a doctor’s appointment at 11, but my partner wasn’t there. Later I looked for them in the 26-year-old’s bedroom, managed to open the door with difficulty and found them dead. I don’t know who killed them, nor did I notice anything during the night,” the 65-year-old allegedly told police.
Forensic laboratory results that will lead to solving the case
“Today we expect answers from the forensic laboratories regarding the findings (found inside the house), the confiscated knife, the weapon and the gunpowder residue test performed on the accused. There will also be an answer about the confiscated clothing, which has some marks that suggest blood stains,” said Greek Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou, speaking to MEGA on Thursday morning, June 11th.
Shocking findings from the forensic examination
The initial findings from the forensic examination of the double crime in Aigion are shocking. According to information, the 26-year-old bears a wound from a contact gunshot to the head, in the temple area, attributed to an air gun of the flobert type. Moreover, initial assessments suggest the blow may have been inflicted while the victim was asleep. Subsequently, as emerges from the same evidence, the victim bears multiple stab wounds, with estimates indicating at least six strikes. Similarly, the 54-year-old mother bears particularly severe traumatic injuries, with more than 20 stab wounds recorded on her body, demonstrating particular brutality in the attack she suffered.
“We cannot prejudge the outcome of the investigation”
The defendant’s lawyer, Maria Iatropoulou, speaking to ERTnews, emphasized that the case file presents significant gaps that do not allow safe conclusions to be drawn. “When charges are attributed for homicide, and moreover double homicide, all the evidence that strengthens the charge must be present,” she said characteristically. “Missing from the case file are all those examinations that would prove whether he is indeed the perpetrator,” she added. At the same time, she reiterated that her client categorically denies any involvement, noting: “He strongly denies any involvement in the deaths.”
The 65-year-old Italian’s requests
According to his lawyer, the 65-year-old requested:
-to notify the Italian embassy
-to contact his family in Italy, as he has no access to his mobile phone, which has been confiscated.
Furthermore, Ms. Iatropoulou called for restraint, emphasizing: “We cannot prejudge the outcome of the investigation, nor can we be 100% sure who the perpetrator is.” Finally, responding to evidence cited by authorities, such as the lack of forced entry, she stressed: “This does not prove that whoever was inside is also a criminal.”
