A series of strong seismic tremors occurred in Euboea on Sunday afternoon (7/6), causing concern among local residents as well as in several areas of Attica, where the tremors were particularly noticeable.
The first seismic tremor measured 4.8 on the Richter scale at 12:58, with its epicenter 6 kilometers south of Prokopi, Euboea. A short time later, two more earthquakes occurred in the same area, with the strongest reaching 5.2 on the Richter scale. After the three strong seismic tremors, three more followed in the broader area, measuring close to 3 on the Richter scale.
Karastathis: “We cannot say if this was the main earthquake”
Speaking to parapolitika.gr, the director of the Geodynamic Institute, Dr. Vasilis Karastathis, stated: “This area has produced similar earthquakes in the past, but we need to see how the phenomenon develops, at least in the first few hours. We need to wait a bit. Under no circumstances can we say whether what happened was the main earthquake.”
