Police officers from the Security Department of the Athens Airport Police Directorate arrested a 43-year-old foreign national after he was found transporting thousands of packs of smuggled cigarettes through Athens International Airport.
According to the Hellenic Police, the arrest took place on Thursday morning, June 4th, following intelligence information. Officers identified the 43-year-old man at the arrivals level, immediately after his arrival on a flight from Cairo.
During the search of his luggage, authorities discovered and confiscated 2,500 cigarette packs as well as 23 tobacco packages, which did not bear the required special consumption tax strip, constituting a violation of the National Customs Code.
Criminal charges were filed against him, while the arrested individual was brought before the competent prosecutor.
