Extended sunshine and unusually high temperatures for the season make up the weather scenario in Central and Western Europe. This intense heat wave is due to the transport of warm air masses from North Africa, combined with a strong high-pressure system (anticyclone) that acts as a “greenhouse,” pushing the mercury even higher.

Weather: African heat “roasts” Central-Western Europe
More specifically in our country, the next 24 hours (Tuesday) will roll with strengthened northerly winds. North and northeastern winds will blow in the Aegean, reaching locally 6 Beaufort. According to meteorologist Dimitris Ziakopoulos, instability during afternoon hours will be quite limited, while temperature will rise, reaching up to 31°C in places.
On Wednesday the scenario changes slightly after noon, as local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms are expected during afternoon hours in western and northwestern Greece, Macedonia and possibly Thessaly. Winds will not exceed 5 Beaufort, while temperature will remain at approximately the same levels.
On Thursday instability will become widespread. During afternoon hours, local rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop in the largest part of mainland Greece. Winds will blow from northern directions at 4 to 5 Beaufort, however in the evening they will strengthen locally to 6 Beaufort in the north. As for the mercury, it will show a small further rise, reaching 32°C on the mainland, while on the islands it will stop at 28°C.
