Two men aged 44 and 39 from Borizia were ordered to remain in custody after their testimony, accused alongside their 43-year-old uncle of a series of incidents that, according to the case file, had been unfolding in recent years in the Amari region. The case had caused intense concern among local residents, who spoke of a climate of fear and lawlessness.
The 43-year-old farmer and livestock breeder from Borizia is hospitalized at Rethymno Hospital, as his lawyer reported he is facing serious heart problems. The investigating magistrate may visit the hospital to take his testimony on Saturday, May 23.
It should be noted that the 43-year-old felt unwell about an hour before his scheduled testimony on Friday (22/5) and requested to be transferred to the Rethymno medical facility. The procedure for his two co-defendants proceeded normally.
Borizia: Explosive testimonies from residents – “You’ll hear much more…”
Around 40 victims testified about an extensive intimidation system, through which property owners were allegedly forced to remain silent or abandon their properties. The testimonies describe incidents of arson, crop destruction, threats, and physical violence. Characteristic is the testimony of a resident who claimed that after years of pressure, he was forced to leave his property. As an act of revenge, according to the case file, his son’s car was completely burned, causing damage worth 27,000 euros.
“You’ll hear much more… I hope justice will be served because we can’t take it anymore,” he told cretalive.gr. “My father hadn’t even died yet and they invaded our sheep pen,” a woman from the area reportedly testified.
Positions of those involved
According to the Greek Police, the case involves felony extortion and organized activity for financial gain, including illegal subsidies through false declarations of livestock and land.
However, the defendants categorically deny the acts attributed to them, claiming they have not trespassed on others’ properties but legally rent land for grazing their animals.
