Published in the Government Gazette (Official Gazette A’ 4/26.03.2026), the Legislative Act establishes fuel subsidy measures and support for citizens, farmers and transport, due to rising energy costs from the escalation of war in the Middle East. The measures announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and detailed by Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Deputy Minister Thanos Petralias are temporary, targeted and equivalent to a fiscal intervention of 300 million euros.
The support measures
1. Diesel fuel subsidy
The diesel fuel subsidy at the pump amounts to 20 cents per liter (including VAT) and will be valid for the two-month period of April – May.
2. Fuel Pass – Citizen support
Support through digital card for use at gas stations, public transport and taxis corresponds to a subsidy of approximately 36 cents per liter of gasoline.
The subsidy through fuel pass is structured as follows:
For cars:
- 60 euros for island regions
- 50 euros for the rest of Greece
For motorcycles:
- 35 euros for island regions
- 30 euros for the rest of Greece
The measures will be valid for the two-month period of April – May.
3. Fertilizer subsidy
A 15% subsidy is provided on the value of fertilizer purchase invoices, with retroactive effect from March 15 and duration until the end of May.
It should be noted that compensation to ferry companies to keep ticket prices contained is the fourth measure of the package. However, because the cost to be paid is annual, it is not included in the Legislative Act but will be voted in Parliament as a separate bill.
In addition to citizen support measures, the Legislative Act establishes compensation for businesses, natural or legal persons engaged in cheese production in Lesbos, for as long as the measures prohibiting the distribution of dairy products due to foot-and-mouth disease cases continue. This measure has retroactive effect from March 15, 2026.
The Legislative Act will be introduced for discussion in Parliament on Monday and is expected to be voted on Tuesday in the plenary session.
