Different approaches were taken in the weather forecast by Yiannis Kallianos and Theodoros Kolydas, at least regarding the days after Tuesday February 17. The two meteorologists certainly agreed that a rainy festival is imminent in Greece, however the first spoke of a temporary situation, while the second wrote that the water levels expected in the country next week (that is, until February 23, Clean Monday) are high. Kallianos spoke of weather improvement from Wednesday February 18, but instability the previous day. It should be noted, however, that in his forecast on MEGA, the well-known meteorologist did not focus on what will happen after Thursday February 19. The former director of EMY, for his part, focused on the period from 20 to 23 February as the most intense… in water terms, but spoke of neutrality and mildness from then until March 2.
Weather: Yiannis Kallianos forecast
Yiannis Kallianos predicted, therefore, the severe weather for Tuesday February 17. He clarified that it will be express and will last only one day, however he emphasized that “both in the Ionian and on the mainland and in the Aegean, the weather will be unstable at intervals, with showers, rain and local thunderstorms. On the mainland, from the Peloponnese all the way to Thrace obviously, in the Ionian Islands but also in most areas of the Aegean“. He did not speak, however, of a change in temperature, emphasizing that it will reach “12 to 14 in the northern mainland parts, 14 to 17 in the central and southern mainland, 16 in the Ionian Islands, 15 to 19 in the island areas of the Aegean. Very strong winds will blow and this means they will exceed 8 to 9 Beaufort locally. In the southern areas of the Aegean, 8 to 9 Beaufort gusts of westerly winds. Southwesterly, southerly winds in the northern areas of the Aegean and 7 to 8 Beaufort locally”.
However, based on the intensity of phenomena in other areas of the country, Attica will get through without extremes. Specifically, Yiannis Kallianos emphasized that “for the Attica region, we expect local rain or even passages of local thunderstorms. Not extreme rainfall, Attica is not in the areas where phenomena will be very strong, however the weather will be unstable at intervals. Temperature from 9 to 16 degrees Celsius. Westerly, southwesterly but also northwesterly winds at intervals, 5 to 6 and locally 7 Beaufort, it will blow quite a bit in Attica and in the Saronic Gulf, that is, in the southern Euboean Gulf but also inside the Athens basin”. For Thessaloniki he commented: “For the Thessaloniki area we expect unstable weather, with rain of weak to moderate intensity, but also passages of local thunderstorms that will make the phenomena a little stronger than moderate intensity locally. Temperature from 5 to 13 degrees Celsius. Early morning and late afternoon respectively, with northerly winds 6 to 7 Beaufort in the Thermaic Gulf area. I must tell you that we will also have some temporary snowfall in the mountainous areas of mainland Greece, while in the northern mainland areas it will snow in semi-mountainous areas locally”.
What he said about February 18 and 19
Yiannis Kallianos spoke of phenomena on the morning of Wednesday February 18, in the eastern Aegean, with “showers, rain and local thunderstorms which will develop, however the weather will quickly improve and we should expect generally clear spells, large and long periods with sunshine, with southerly winds, 5 to 7 and locally 8 Beaufort, which will gradually decrease in intensity”. He noted an overall small rise in temperature, emphasizing: “From 14 to 18 degrees temperature from North to South”.
Regarding Thursday February 19, he referred to the “latest forecast data”. He commented that “generally we expect good weather conditions, with few local rains in the west, perhaps also in the northeastern Aegean. Temperature from 15 to 18 degrees Celsius and southerly winds 6 to 7 Beaufort in open seas”.
Theodoros Kolydas: When temperature drops in Athens
For his part, Theodoros Kolydas with his post, in which he presented a map, emphasized that the whole week will involve rain, especially the four-day period February 20-23. Additionally, he commented that on the 20th and 21st there will be a drop in temperature, however after the 23rd the “character” of the weather will change. He characterized the period until March 2 as “dynamic, but typically wintry ten-day period. Specifically: “The period February 16–23 is shaping up to be rainier than normal for the country, with emphasis on the west and northwest, where successive disturbances are expected and locally significant rainfall amounts. The Eastern Mediterranean appears warmer than the season, while in Greece temperatures move close to normal levels, without indication of prolonged cold.
However, around February 20–23 an organized rain episode appears and subsequently a noticeable cold change, with temperature drop and snowfall mainly in mountainous areas.
For Athens, the scenario is characterized by intense variability: initially temporary rains, peak phenomena around 20–21/2 and then significant temperature drop with a somewhat more wintry feel.
The period February 23 – March 2 presents a more neutral and milder character. Rains are limited and become more sporadic, while temperatures return close to or slightly above normal levels. Overall, it is a dynamic but typically wintry ten-day period, with alternations and without extreme deviations”.
“Red Code” in four regions
The two meteorologists, however, do not disagree at all with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, which has already put four regions of the country on “Red Code” alert status, following the issuance of the Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin (EWDB) for Tuesday February 17, issued by the National Meteorological Service. According to this, the weather will show new deterioration in the next 24 hours.
Specifically, the Region of Peloponnese, the Region of Western Greece, the Region of Ionian Islands and the Region of Epirus are put on increased readiness, aiming to address risks from intense flood phenomena, as well as coastal flooding due to stormy winds. As the Civil Protection announcement states, in this context, Municipalities and Regions are called to immediately convene the Local Operational Coordination Bodies for Civil Protection (L.O.C.B.C.P.) and the Regional Operational Coordination Bodies for Civil Protection (R.O.C.B.C.P.), in order to coordinate the necessary prevention and preparedness actions.
