Scenes of deep grief unfolded in Amari and Gerakari in Rethymno, where on Thursday (30/07) the funerals were held for the two firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, battling the wildfire that broke out in the region. The first funeral held was that of 25-year-old seasonal firefighter Pantelis Diamantakis, who died at Kria Vrisi. The most heartbreaking figures at the ceremony were his family members, who bid farewell to their young hero in silent grief.

The funeral service was held at 12:00 at the Church of Saint George in Amari, presided over by the Archbishop of Crete, Evgenios. Among those present were relatives, friends, fellow members of the Fire Service, representatives of the state, local government officials, and a large gathering of citizens. Notable attendees included Rethymno MP and former Minister of Civil Protection Yannis Kefalogiannis, the Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, and the Deputy Governor of Rethymno Maria Lioni, all of whom paid their respects to the memory of the young firefighter.
The hero’s coffin was draped in the Greek flag. As the procession moved out of the church, the crowd broke into applause, with many calling out “immortal” — a traditional Greek tribute to the fallen.

Stavros Arnaoutakis: A day of mourning for all of Crete
In a public statement, the Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis described this as a day of mourning for the entire island, noting that the two firefighters “fell as heroes” in the battle to protect human lives and property. He extended his heartfelt condolences to their families, their colleagues, and the entire Fire Service, emphasizing that their sacrifice would remain forever etched in the collective memory of the Cretan people.
In a similar vein, the Mayor of Agios Vasileios, Yannis Tatararakis, stated that the municipality is living through one of the most difficult moments in its modern history. He said the sacrifice of the two firefighters would stand as a timeless symbol of selflessness, bravery, and unconditional service to others, and expressed his gratitude to all those continuing to operate under extremely challenging conditions to fully contain the fire.
A condolence message was also sent by the Mayor of Mylopotamos, Giorgos Klados, who noted that the loss of the two firefighters transcends personal grief and becomes a source of mourning for all of Crete. He stressed that honoring their memory must go hand in hand with a lasting commitment to prevention, meaningful reinforcement of Civil Protection services, and ongoing support for those who serve on the front lines every day.
Firefighter Manolis Stratidakis laid to rest in an emotional farewell
On the afternoon of Thursday (30/7), the funeral service for 58-year-old firefighter Manolis Stratidakis was held in Gerakari. As with Pantelis Diamantakis, his coffin was draped in the Greek flag. Among those present was the leader of the main opposition party and president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, while Yannis Kefalogiannis and Konstantinos Kyranakis represented the government.
