A horrific family tragedy has shocked Australia, as two parents in Perth allegedly killed their two autistic sons before taking their own lives. The bodies of Jarrod Clune, 50, his 49-year-old partner Maiwenna Goasdoue, and their two teenage sons, Leon, 16, and Otis, 14, were discovered at their luxury home in the Mosman Park area on the morning of January 30th. According to the Daily Mail, authorities believe it was a murder-suicide, as both boys had severe, non-verbal forms of autism and faced significant health challenges.
Australia: Parents felt isolated and without adequate support
A note found in the house appears to confirm that the parents jointly decided to end their lives and their children’s lives, including details about the family’s finances and their plans. The Clune family faced intense isolation and psychological pressure. Friends revealed that the parents had lost state support for one of the boys, while an incident at school where a staff member called one of the sons a “monster” reinforced their sense of abandonment.

Mai’s close friend, Nedra, reported that the parents felt isolated and without adequate support from friends, relatives, and state services, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) failing to meet their needs. A family friend described Jarrod and Maiwenna as a “strong couple” who deeply loved their children and fought for necessary care, “fighting a losing battle against a system that isn’t here to help.”
Two boys with kind hearts
Despite their difficulties, Leon and Otis were children with pure hearts and special interests. Leon loved Toy Story and spent time with his friends at school, while Otis had a particular fondness for Finding Nemo, bringing along figurines of his favorite characters to help him cope with his sensory issues. The children also loved their pets – two dogs and a cat – which were tragically killed along with the family. Leon and Otis were enrolled at Christ Church Grammar School, but the school experience wasn’t always positive. Otis had been expelled from school due to a spitting incident, while the family struggled to find the right school for children with severe needs. Teachers emphasized that the children had good hearts and needed understanding and support to develop.

Community shocked by the tragedy
The tragedy has left a deep mark on the local Mosman Park community and broader Perth area. Local children, friends, and educators described the events as shocking and “very sad.” Mosman Park is one of Perth’s most expensive suburbs, but neither financial comfort nor social status could protect the family from feelings of isolation and abandonment. The Western Australian government, through Premier Roger Cook, stated that while the police investigation is the priority, there’s a need to understand the deeper causes that led to the tragedy, with the goal of preventing similar incidents in the future.
