A major controversy has erupted in Italy after a far-right businessman brutally assaulted a migrant in the city of San Benedetto del Tronto — punching him repeatedly before throwing him to the side of the pavement. The businessman then uploaded the footage to social media himself, sparking fierce backlash from the Italian press, while even the center-right mayor of the city condemned the incident.
He knocked him to the ground, pinned him down, and began punching him
The businessman, Giuseppe Barboni, is a member of the far-right party “National Future,” which was founded just a few months ago. In the video he posted on social media, he is seen getting into a heated argument with a migrant who was blocking traffic in San Benedetto del Tronto. Shortly after, Barboni — a martial arts champion — throws the migrant to the ground, pins him down, and begins punching him, before dragging him to the edge of the pavement. “This Iraqi man has been disturbing the city for months, and in the last 24 hours he caused complete chaos,” he wrote on social media following the attack.
Strong backlash from the Italian press and the city’s mayor
The violent incident triggered sharp reactions from the Italian media, which leveled heavy criticism at Barboni, while the center-right mayor of the city, Nicola Mazzoni, also condemned the attack. It is worth noting that the far-right party “National Future,” led by retired general Roberto Vannacci, advocates among other things for the mandatory repatriation of undocumented migrants, has openly clashed with the LGBTQ+ community, and considers femicide “just a murder like any other.” According to the latest polls, the party is currently polling at 6.2% of voting intentions.
