With a clear message in favor of unity and deterrence, NATO leaders reaffirmed, through the declaration adopted at the Summit, their “unwavering commitment” to collective defense, as provided for under Article 5 of the Alliance.
New defense procurement and support for Ukraine
At the same time, allies announced new defense procurement packages exceeding $50 billion, while pledging €70 billion in support for Ukraine in 2026. The declaration also notes that member states are making a sovereign commitment to maintain at least equivalent levels of support for Ukraine through 2027.
Leaders spoke of a “stronger Europe within a stronger NATO,” emphasizing that European countries and Canada are taking on a greater share of responsibility for the Alliance’s defense in cooperation with the United States. They underscored that NATO’s deterrent power rests on a combination of nuclear, conventional, and missile defense capabilities, complemented by space and cyber capabilities.
