The right to euthanasia comes to the forefront through the shocking story of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo from Spain. The young woman is expected to proceed with medically assisted suicide, as she wishes to stop suffering and die “beautifully” and with dignity, having received approval from the European Court of Human Rights.
Spain: Noelia Castillo’s interview about euthanasia
“I will wear my most beautiful dress and put on makeup. It will be something simple,” Castillo said in an interview on Ahora Sonsoles on television station Antena 3. “I don’t want to be an example to anyone, it’s simply my life,” she said, explaining that she wishes to proceed with euthanasia within the care facility where she lives.

Castillo’s story began in 2022, when she suffered a sexual assault and attempted suicide by jumping from the fifth floor. The serious injuries left her paraplegic, which under the relevant legal framework led to the approval of her euthanasia request in 2021.
“I hope I can finally rest”
Noelia mentioned that her father tried to block the procedure, while she appealed to Spain’s Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights and was vindicated. Speaking about her father, she accused him of not respecting her choice. “He didn’t do it and he never will,” she said. Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, stated that while she disagrees, she will support her daughter.
The 25-year-old noted: “I finally made it. I hope I can finally rest” and added: “I want to leave now and stop suffering, period.” Her interview sparked reactions on social media regarding the right to euthanasia. For her, this choice represents a way to end both physical and psychological pain.
