After San Francisco and meetings with artificial intelligence and new technology companies, it’s now time for investors and fund managers. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is heading to New York tonight, where, as every year, he will participate in the UN General Assembly session and the so-called High-level Week.
Mitsotakis in New York: Investors, bankers and fund managers top the agenda
With few meetings with foreign leaders on his schedule, his efforts are focused primarily on discussions and meetings with investors, bankers, fund managers and business executives. Among others, he will meet with Morgan Stanley President and CEO Ted Pick, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Morgan Stanley Institutional Securities Group President Jeffrey Holzschuh, and Morgan Stanley’s Head of EMEA Power and Utilities Investment Banking Francesco Puletti. He will also meet with top executives from Citigroup, Lockheed Martin — manufacturer of the F-35 fighter jets — and Exxon Mobil, which is set to participate in the first drilling operation in Greece in 40 years, west of Corfu, this coming February.
Mitsotakis’ message on the Greek economy and investment opportunities
As his associates point out, Mr. Mitsotakis will have the opportunity to highlight the substantial progress of the Greek economy, the government’s commitment to fiscal stability and the continued advancement of reforms — which have already resulted in a steady increase in investment as a share of GDP and record-breaking performance in attracting Foreign Direct Investment. He will also emphasize, according to the same sources, that Greece represents a safe and welcoming destination for international companies seeking to establish regional operations, offering a particularly favorable tax regime for their executives.
“We are very focused on economic transformation, and I am very pleased that Greece is no longer seen as the ‘black sheep’ of Europe. We now have an economy growing at a much faster pace than the eurozone average. At the same time, we are reducing our debt at a very rapid rate,” the Prime Minister said yesterday during a conversation with TechCrunch Editor-in-Chief Connie Loizos, at an event organized by Endeavor Greece titled “The Future of AI Elsewhere,” held in San Francisco.
The meeting with the Greek diaspora, attendance at the oceans event, and the meeting with Carney
Specifically, this afternoon (local time), shortly after arriving in New York, the Prime Minister will meet with and address members of the Greek diaspora at the historic (dating back to the 19th century) University Club of New York in Manhattan. The event is being held in cooperation with 28 leading Greek-American organizations and community bodies.
Earlier, at 10 a.m., European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, together with UNESCO, are co-organizing an event for the International Alliance for the strengthening and expansion of ocean monitoring and observation. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to attend in order to declare Greece’s support for OceanEye, the European ocean observation initiative. He will also hold a separate, private meeting with Mr. Carney, at a time when the Canadian leader is seeking closer ties with the European Union. He will additionally meet with the President of Senegal and the Prime Minister of Armenia.
More than 30 institutional investors at Mitsotakis’ St. Regis meeting
On Thursday morning, at the historic St. Regis New York hotel, the Prime Minister, together with his investment adviser Dimitris Politis, will meet with more than 30 institutional investors with exposure to Greece and its largest companies. He will then participate in a meeting of the Europe-Gulf Forum, co-organized by the Antenna Group and the Atlantic Council, and at midday he will meet with representatives of international and American Jewish organizations.
Mitsotakis’ address to the UN General Assembly
At 5:10 p.m. on the same day, he will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at United Nations headquarters, before delivering his address to the UN General Assembly.
Earlier that day, he will participate in Columbia University’s World Leaders Forum and will be among the speakers on a panel at the American university discussing the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents for human development and global progress. World Bank President Ajay Banga will also participate in the panel, with the discussion to be moderated by well-known CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria.
Mitsotakis’ Bloomberg interview before departing the US
On Friday morning, just hours before his departure from the United States, he will give a live interview on Bloomberg Television’s widely watched economics and markets program “Surveillance.” He will also meet with Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.
