Greece’s national initiative for price reductions at supermarkets is moving into implementation, with a planned rollout running from August 31 through December 31, 2026. The Independent Market and Consumer Protection Authority (IAMCP) has issued a formal invitation to business associations (SEV, SEVT, ESVEP, ESE), establishing a strict framework for the initiative. The program targets permanent shelf price reductions of between 5% and 20% — not temporary promotional offers. High-priority categories include essential food items (meat, dairy), baby products, detergents, and school supplies. Businesses are required to submit binding proposals by barcode by July 27, 2026, while consumers will be informed through the PosoKanei platform and dedicated in-store labeling highlighting the price reductions.

Supermarket price cuts up to 20%: Which products are included and when do they start?
Participation in the initiative is open to all product categories and to all suppliers and businesses that wish to make a meaningful contribution to bringing prices down. The categories listed below represent areas of particular priority for the IAMCP and do not constitute an exhaustive or restrictive list of eligible participants. A key requirement is that every participating business must include high-turnover product codes in its binding proposals, with a recommended shelf price reduction of at least 5%. Participation will not be considered meaningful if a business selects only low-turnover codes, peripheral items, special product lines, or products with negligible sales weight. The supplementary inclusion of such codes is entirely acceptable and permitted, provided the business has already included significant high-turnover codes in its binding proposal.
The IAMCP places particular priority on the following categories:

PosoKanei
To ensure immediate, simple, and transparent consumer information, the IAMCP will create a dedicated, clearly distinguishable section on the PosoKanei platform, where all standardized products participating in the National Price Reduction Initiative will be listed. This digital showcase will serve as the single, official catalog of participating standardized products and will allow consumers to clearly distinguish them from temporary promotional offers or other commercial activities. In addition, a unified and clearly visible labeling system may be used in supermarket stores, carrying a common message. The special label will be placed at prominent points throughout the store and on participating shelf codes, allowing consumers to instantly identify which products are included in the initiative.
