The DEI Group is moving forward with the installation of four new gas turbine units with a total capacity of 58 MW at the power generation stations on Rhodes and Kos. Work on the installation of the two units at Soroni, Rhodes, has already begun, while the corresponding works at the Kos station are expected to commence within the month. For Rhodes, this marks the third upgrade at the Soroni plant. The new units are expected to become operational in the summer of 2027. The four units are of the Titan 130 type, each with a rated capacity of 14.5 MW and an efficiency rating of 33%–34%. The units are dual-fuel and incorporate technologies to reduce gaseous emissions and particulate matter.

DEI Group: Key features of the new units
A defining feature of the new units is their rapid start-up capability. They require approximately 10 minutes to start and reach their rated capacity, allowing them to respond immediately to fluctuations in demand and the needs of the electrical grid.
The SoLoNOx technology they employ reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions without requiring water injection. In addition, the replacement of heavy fuel oil (HFO) with diesel (LFO), combined with emission reduction systems, is expected to contribute to a lower environmental footprint for the stations. The noise level of the new units will not exceed 65 dB at the station boundaries.
Supporting the islands’ electrical grid
The installation of the new units is expected to increase the production capacity of the stations on Rhodes and Kos, strengthening the energy sufficiency of both islands. Notably, their operation as flexible generation units will allow for rapid coverage of grid demand and complementary operation alongside renewable energy units. At the same time, the increase in available generation capacity is expected to enhance energy adequacy on Rhodes and Kos and help reduce the cost of Public Service Obligations (PSO).
Investing in flexible energy generation
The two new projects at Soroni, Rhodes (Phase III) and Kos are part of the DEI Group’s broader strategy to upgrade power generation infrastructure on the islands and enhance the flexibility of the electrical grid. It is worth noting that in 2025, similar modernisation projects were completed at DEI generation stations on Santorini, Rhodes (Phase I) and Crete, while earlier this year works were also completed on Rhodes (Phase II), Chios and Lesvos.
Large-scale renewable energy development is being combined with investments in storage systems and flexible power generation, as well as energy management solutions leveraging artificial intelligence tools to strengthen the stability and efficiency of the grid.
